What is Read 180?
Read 180 is a Scholastic created program that gives struggling readers the opportunity to focus on reading skills and comprehension. Read 180 is an innovative program that uses technology, high interest books (a mixture of fiction and nonfiction literature), and levelled small-group instruction.
The Computer Software is interactive, fun, and very "smart". The software continuously adjusts to each individual student needs, whether it be to slow down and review or speed up and challenge. Students will record and listen to themselves read, be able to click on any unknown words while reading short stories, play spelling and vocabulary building games and much more. Best of all, the software can exactly pin point what skill a student is struggling with, which allows the teacher to address the topic immediately in a small group instruction lesson. This system of student work and immediate feedback is a true formula for growth.
The Independent Reading library was created to be of high interest and appropriately leveled. Students will read independently while working on book projects which help them stop, think, and understand. Students also have the choice to read and listen to audio books. The audio books are a higher level of reading, students still must work on a coinciding book project to help them understand the content. Students will be able to feel successful in reading, and in comprehending. Students then have a chance to earn rewards by taking Reading Counts Quizzes based on comprehension of each book. They will be able to visually see their growth and be rewarded for their hard work.
During Small Group Instruction, students will be with the teacher in no more than a 7-to-1 ratio. We will work on building specific skills, breaking down misconceptions, constructing reading strategies, and creating confidence. As I understand the importance of each component of the Read 180 program, small group instruction is my favorite part. : )
